May 15-17, 2009 Banff Centre – Banff, AB This workshop is sponsored by the University of Calgary’s Latin American Research Centre, through its Armed Groups Project, with a grant from the United States Institute of Peace and with support from The Schoool of Public Policy a the University of Calgary. We held an exploratory workshop earlier this year, the resulting papers from which are available online: http://www.armedgroups.org/the-armed-groups-project/events/arms-politics-and-violence-and-latin-america. The principal goal of this project is to address the relationship between structural and contingent determinants of violence in Latin America. Some researchers argue that certain areas in Latin America are structurally predisposed toward violence, while others trace the current crisis in some parts of the region to more contingent factors, such as the drug trade. How the problem is framed matters not only analytically but also for policies that aim to address the problem. We are aiming to produce an edited volume to be published for an academic audience, as well as policy brief for Latin American policymakers. This website will be updated regularly. More Information
