Arms, Politics and Violence and Latin America

A WORKSHOP
University of Calgary

April 25, 2008

This one-day workshop on "Arms, Violence and Politics in Latin America"  will address how the relationships between arms, violence and politics has changed over time, and where these relationships may be heading in the future. The Workshop will bring together key individuals who have grappled with different aspects of the problem of armed violence in Latin America, to compare and contrast findings and experiences.

The ultimate purpose of the workshop is to set the stage for a larger meeting of leading academics, practitioners, and decision makers to be held within six months of the workshop. Participants in the April 2008 workshop will be asked to draft memos based on determined themes, which will become the basis of a preliminary report that will provide the framework for the larger conference, to be held November 2008.

This event is sponsored by the Latin American Research Centre, Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, the Institute for United States Policy Research, and the Institute for Advanced Policy Research.
