Dr. Zaverucha holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago. He directs the Center for Study of Coercive Institutions at the Federal University of Pernambuco and is a researcher of  the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), level 1B. He has been a visiting scholar at the Center of Studies of Violence at the University of Texas, Austin, and at the University of São Paulo. He was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor of the Magistrate Superior School of Pernambuco in 2002.

His last book, FHC, Forças Armadas e Policía: Entre o Autoritarismo e a Democracia (Record, Rio de Janeiro, 2005), won the Book Prize of the Brazil Section of the Latin American Studies Association in the category of best book on Brazil in Portuguese.
